Land Use

As the owners and managers of large areas of land, we are committed to protecting and improving the landscape, wildlife habitats, archaeology and cultural heritage. Whenever we undertake any new development on our airport sites, we consult with stakeholders, such as local authorities and Natural England, and conduct assessments of the likely environmental impacts.

Archaeology and Cultural Heritage

Within the grounds of our airports are some sites of archaeological interest and a number of listed buildings. These include a Roman settlement at Humberside Airport and three Grade 2 listed buildings within the proposed extension to the operational area at Manchester Airport. Any plans for new developments include measures to preserve archaeology and heritage. For example, when the second runway was built at Manchester Airport, three timber-framed listed buildings were carefully dismantled and reconstructed in similar settings in Cheshire.
