Promoting Sustainability

Manchester Airport train station

As well as managing the environmental and social impacts associated with our airports, we work to promote environmentally sound choices by our customers.

Surface Access

Surface access strategies for each airport are designed to maximise sustainable methods of transport including providing good access to public transport links and using low carbon vehicles. We liaise with local bus companies to ensure our passengers have the option to take public transport wherever possible. At Manchester Airport, the 2009 opening of a third platform at the rail station has enabled improvements to be made to the timetable, as well as increasing reliability. For those passengers who do choose to drive, we encourage airport parking rather than being dropped off, as this requires half as many journeys. In addition, passengers can offset the carbon footprint from their journey on our airports' websites

Raising Awareness

We believe that targeted, effective communications play an important part in engaging our customers and others around sustainability goals.

This year we launched dedicated Environment and Learning Zones in all our airports. These are specially designed areas with a range of exhibition displays, interactive media and other materials. Our aim in developing these Zones is to keep people informed about what MAG is doing to manage environmental and social impacts, and increase awareness of the benefits of a sustainable aviation industry.

A tour of the new Zones is now on offer for organised school visits to our airports, providing a valuable focus for us to get the sustainability message across to children and teachers.
