5 steps

The Carbon Challenge aims to promote awareness of carbon emissions across the Manchester Airport site and bring about reductions in carbon emissions. The five steps of the Carbon Challenge are:

Measure your carbon footprint

The first stage of the programme involves calculating the Scope 1 and 2 carbon dioxide emissions. These are typically from activities such as energy use (gas, electricity) and fuel used in your owned vehicles. However, over time the scope of the footprint may expand to include relevant scope 3 emissions which are specific to individual members (e.g. staff commuting, waste).

Plan for carbon management

This stage involves developing the management activities, responsibilities etc. required to bring about a reduction in your company’s carbon dioxide emissions.

Engage with colleagues and partners on site

Communication internally with staff is key to bringing about carbon reductions. This part of the Challenge is also about committing to work with other companies, through the Carbon Challenge, to share best practice.

Reduce your carbon emissions

A key part of the commitment to the Challenge is making a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions (scope 1 and 2). This aspect of the Challenge is not audited but it is hoped that all partner companies will be able to demonstrate a reduction over time, either in absolute or relative terms. For those partners wishing to seek formal certification of a reduction in carbon emissions, then the Challenge has been set up to reflect the Carbon Trust Standard, the principal carbon scheme in the UK.

Report your carbon footprint

It is expected that partners will report their carbon emissions, and the steps being taken to reduce them, to both the other partners of the Challenge, and also to their other key stakeholders.
