ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
We hold ISO 14001 accreditation for all our airports. As part of this we encourage all our tenants to work with us to continually improve the environmental performance of the site. We also audit our own and our tenants’ facilities and operations to check compliance with environmental legislation and to strive for best practice in everything we do.
Our airfields drain to local watercourses. If you are working out on the ramp, there are a number of measures that you need to take to prevent adverse impacts on the environment, which are contained within each airport’s Aerodrome Manual. This includes procedures in the event of spillages, controls on deicing activities, information on where aircraft and vehicle washing can take place and vehicle standards.
Waste Management and Recycling
We can provide waste management and recycling services to most service partners and tenants at our airports including aircraft cleaning waste, retail & catering, office cleaning wastes etc, or can provide advice on legislative compliance for your own contracts. We provide extensive recycling facilities at all our airports and have links with local charities if there are items that are suitable for donation including furniture and textiles. We have committed that Manchester, East Midlands and Bournemouth Airports will be carbon neutral for ground operations. This includes energy supplied by us to our tenants so we are keen to reduce energy used by all on site.
All electricity supplied at Manchester, East Midlands and Bournemouth Airports is from renewable sources, and we are increasing the amount of renewable electricity generated on site. We have wind turbines and ground source heat pumps at East Midlands, and photovolcaic cells at Bournemouth, and are working on proposals for renewable energy generation at Manchester.
At Manchester we also have a Carbon Challenge – a group of major energy users on site sharing knowledge to improve energy efficiency and to measure and reduce their carbon emissions.
