New Development
As an example of our new approach to development, Terminal 1 at Manchester Airport will be at the forefront of the move towards carbon neutral and as such designers have worked closely with tenants and their design teams to reduce their required electrical load by a third bringing with it significant savings in CO2 emissions.
All new developments are expected to meet the highest standards for energy efficiency, waste reduction and water consumption. The station complex and 4M office block at Manchester achieved a BREEAM ‘excellent ‘ rating.
The new pier at East Midlands Airport includes innovative energy reduction and conservation measures. New developments are required to contribute to their own energy generation using ground source heat pumps, biomass, solar power or possibly wind turbines. Through this requirement we expect to see 25% of the final energy demand coming from renewable sources by 2015.
Bournemouth Airport is already assessing the possibility of biomass boilers, which burn items such as wood chips, wood pellets or cereals and produce, to heat their new terminal. Trials of wind turbines are already underway at Manchester and the four wind turbines at East Midlands will be a significant contribution to the new low carbon agenda at the airport
