Crane Permits

Companies who require to operate cranes and lifting equipment within 6 kilometres of the Aerodrome boundary and at heights of more than 10m Above Ground Level (AGL) or that of surrounding trees or structures must receive prior permission and a Crane Permit from the Airport Authority.

The developer or crane operator should approach the airport at least 21 days in advance to use a crane or tall construction equipment to find out if there are any limitations and regulatory procedures that must be agreed before work commences and to obtain a Crane Permit.

In some circumstances it may be necessary for Manchester Airport to contact the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in which case the applicant would need to co-operate in developing a safety case.

The applicant will be required to provide the following details for the permit application:

  • Type of crane or equipment to be used
  • Precise location of the equipment to at least six figure Eastings and Northings
  • Maximum Operating Height in metres Above Ordnance Datum (AOD) or Above Ground Level (AGL) plus ground level in AOD
  • Heights "Above Ordnance Datum are those shown on Ordnance Survey Maps as "Above Mean Sea Level" (AMSL)
  • Intended dates and times of operation
  • Applicant's name and contact details
  • Contact details for Crane Contractor
