New Air Traffic Control Tower

Work has commenced to construct a new Air Traffic Control Tower on the western side of the airport. When opened in May 2013 it will replace the existing facility on top of Terminal 1, and at 61 metres it will be the second tallest in the UK. Piling work will be completed before Christmas 2011, and the tower structure itself will rise in April 2012. The tower will offer ATC panoramic views over the entire airfield, but in particular the views will be excellent to the busy northside taxiways and runway crossing routes. A ground level building adjoining the tower will house the approach control suite, engineering rooms, and offices. ATC at Manchester is provided by NATS Services Ltd, although the £20M tower project is financed entirely by Manchester Airports Group.
