Runway 1 (05L/23R) Major Refurbishment

This is a very large and complex scheme to re-furbish the northern runway (05L-23R). This runway last had a major overhaul in 1979-80, although partial replacement of the surface has happened since then. Planning for this project is at an advanced stage and work will commence on site early in 2010. The scope involves replacing the asphalt surface (or ‘wearing course’) along much of the length and width, installing new lighting in the surface, a new ring main, and localised strengthening of the shoulders.
Related projects to be carried out over the next 12 months are the replacement of the 23R Approach Lighting, replacement of the 05L and 23R Instrument Landing Systems, and the construction of a new electrical sub-station. The main civil engineering works to the runway itself will require a lengthy programme of night closures of the runway. The airport will remain operational throughout by using the other runway, 05R-23L.
