Building Better Airports
Key Stage 4
‘Building Better Airports’ is a design based challenge, drawing upon a variety of skills surrounding science, engineering and marketing.
This resource is based on a hypothetical example of East Midlands Airport’s need for a new terminal building. East Midlands Airport is a growing regional airport located in the Midlands and in the centre of a key road network. To meet the increasing demand for increased foreign travel and cargo transportation by air, the airport will need to build a new terminal building.
In teams, students become companies who are tasked with designing a new layout and logo for East Midlands Airport. They are provided with the information and materials to help them make the best decisions along the way. Groups then have to present their proposals to the rest of the group.
This resource helps students to think about all the different aspects of running an international airport, such as:
• Terminal layout
• Passenger flows
• Separating departing and arriving passengers
• Retailers
