Up in the Air
Key Stage 2
If you’re looking for an interesting and unique way of helping your students to learn about science and the environment, ‘Up in the Air’ could be the answer.
East Midlands Airport has produced an education resource pack targeted at key stage two that links environmental and science education to airport activities and is based on the airport site.
The resource pack takes the form of a ‘loan box’ which includes all the equipment and activity cards needed for teachers to run a self-led education day, as well as activities that can be done pre and post visiting the airport. The topics covered in the pack include:
• Sound
• Trees & Landscape
• Flight
• Weather
• Creatures
This involves a number of fun and interactive activities designed to challenge and stimulate.
‘Up in the Air’ is based on the airport’s perimeter Trail, near the Aeropark. This area offers wonderful views of the runway and access to a range of habitats.
If you are interested in using the ‘Up in the Air’ loan boxes, please contact community@eastmidlandsairport.com or 01332 818414 for booking information.
A £30 deposit is required, refundable on return of all equipment in good condition. It is advised that you collect the equipment and activity cards in advance of your visit so you can plan which topics/activities you would like to do on the day.
Going to East Midlands Airport
Key Stage 1 & 2
'Going to East Midlands Airport' is a fun and interactive book which helps pupils to understand the processes and procedures which take place every day at East Midlands Airport.
It follows the story of Dani and Jed, who are going on holiday to Jamaica with their mum and dad. The family check-in their baggage, go through security and take off on their way to the sunshine. This is interspersed with different interactive games along the way, including looking at different symbols that can be seen at the airport, what to pack in your suitcase and where different places are in the world.
‘Going to East Midlands Airport’ also looks at different reasons why people might make a visit to the airport. This includes the airport’s six mile perimeter Trail, which is well worth a visit to learn about different species of wildlife which can be found in the local area.
To make the most of this or any other education resource, it is recommended that you visit The Aerozone,
