ICT in Action
Annually around 20 million passengers pass through Manchester Airport. Smooth operations on this scale couldn’t be achieved without an exceptional IT infrastructure, managed by Manchester Airport but used by all of the 250 companies that operate on the site. This IT infrastructure includes 120 servers, 64 communications rooms, 900 business workstations, 6,500 telephone extensions – and 5,000 km optical fibre!
From the Airport to the classroom…
So, how do we manage such a big system? If you are teaching ICT or business studies, that’s the sort of question your students could be asking. They need to know how real organisations work and Manchester Airport makes a fascinating case study: it’s local, it’s one of the most dynamic businesses in the Northwest, and it is IT-reliant.
ICT in Action was developed as CD-ROM to demonstrate how the Airport uses IT. Developed with input from teachers who deliver a range of courses from GCSE and B/TEC to HND, ICT in Action is targeted at KS 3 & 4, with extensions and activities for higher-level courses. Health, Safety and Security
Written for the Advanced GNVQ Leisure and Tourism course. This pack examines the importance of maintaining a safe environment and how this is achieved. The module is divided into two sections, the first covers issues that affect the Airport involving employees and visitors and considers some of the key laws, regulations and codes of practice that govern how the Airport operates. The second is an illustration of how the Airport deals with emergencies, using an emergency exercise - Operation Nighthawk - as a real life example.
